GLASS RAILINGS & GUARDRAILS

Glass balustrades give you the view and the barrier at the same time, which is why they have taken over balconies and stair openings. The engineering is in the fixings, not the glass: standoffs, base channels and posts have to be anchored into sound structure and set dead level, because glass shows every millimetre of error.

WHAT WE BUILD

  • Frameless glass balustrades on stainless standoffs
  • Base-channel glass railings for balconies and terraces
  • Glass and stainless staircase railings
  • Stainless steel guardrails and handrails without glass
  • Mixed builds — glass infill with a stainless or steel top rail
  • Pool, terrace and mezzanine edge protection

MATERIALS WE USE

Tempered glass

Toughened so it crumbles rather than shards. The only glass that belongs in a railing.

Grade 304 stainless fittings

Standoffs, clamps, posts and handrails that will not bloom rust on a wet balcony.

Steel substructure

Where a railing carries real load, a steel frame does the work and the glass fills it.

Typical lead time

1–3 weeks — glass is cut to measure after the frame is set out

QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

Is a glass railing safe?

When it is built correctly, yes. We use tempered glass, which breaks into blunt granules instead of shards, and anchor the fixings into structural concrete or steel rather than screed or tile. The failure mode in a bad glass railing is almost always the fixing, not the pane.

Frameless or with posts?

Frameless on standoffs or a base channel gives the cleanest look and the best view, and costs more because the glass has to be thicker and the fixings do all the work. Posts with glass infill are more economical and easier to fit on an existing balcony.

Can you fit glass to a balcony that is already built?

Usually. We check what the edge is made of and whether it can take the fixings — a properly poured concrete edge is straightforward, a hollow block parapet may need reinforcement first. We will tell you before quoting, not after fitting.

Do you supply the glass too?

Yes. We set out and build the frame or fixings first, then have the tempered glass cut to the measured openings, because glass cannot be trimmed once toughened.
